The Bureau of Field Operations is comprised of civilian investigators and support staff, law enforcement dispatchers, and sworn officers - both troopers and motor carrier inspectors.
The primary responsibility of the sworn officers is the regulation of traffic and the prevention of highway crashes. The powers and duties of sworn traffic officers, the authority to conduct motor vehicle inspections, and the authority to operate an academy to train state, county, and local traffic patrol officers and other related personnel are designated in
Chapter 110 (Motor Vehicles) of the Wisconsin Statutes.
The Bureau:
• Enforces criminal and traffic laws
• Engages in highway criminal interdiction activities
• Oversees motor carrier safety and weight facilities (SWEFs)
• Assists local law enforcement agencies with traffic safety, civil disturbances, and disasters
