OPERATIONAL K9-FIRST AID

TOPICS OF INSTRUCTION:

​This course prepares emergency personnel in how to properly deploy life saving techniques in the event of an injured K9. This course also provides training on daily care and handling of a K9.​


OBJECTIVES:

​​​• Physical examination and handling of the healthy K9
• Physical examination and handling of the injured K9
• Wound Care: facial lacerations, eye, and paw injuries
• Immobilization and bandaging
• Triage, shock, pain, and heat stroke treatment
• CPR/Recover BLS and ALS scenario drills
• Introduction to hemorrhage control
• Oxygen administration
• Naloxone administration
• Heat stroke recognition and treatment
• Illicit drug exposure in the working K9
• Toxicology
• Major trauma overview
• Intubation (cadaver)
• IV catheters and fluid resuscitation as well as intraosseous catheter placement (cadaver)
• Recognizing pneumothorax, needle decompression, and chest tube placement (Cadaver)
• Review of first aid kits and recommendations of supplies.​
