Transportation Safety and Technical Services

​​​The Bureau of Transportation Safety and Technical Services provides a department-wide focus for: 

The Bureau provides technology services to law enforcement agencies statewide within the Public Safety Technology Services Section, including:​

  • ​Crash Records Unit - This team provides front line phone and email support for law enforcement and the public for a host of crash data collection systems. Unit members serve as the data stewards for Wisconsin crash data as well as performing mandatory fatal crash reporting through the federal Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
  • Mobile Architecture for Communications Handling (MACH) Unit - The members of this unit administer the Mobile Architecture for Communications Handling (MACH) software that serves as the computer aided dispatch software for the State Patrol and Wisconsin DNR Conservation Wardens. The State Patrol hosted MACH software is also in use by over 200 ​public safety agencies within Wisconsin.​​​
  • ​​Traffic and Criminal Software (TraCS) Unit – The members of this unit develop and maintain a suite of more than 20 forms for use by all Wisconsin law enforcement agencies through the Traffic and Criminal Software (TraCS), a data collection tool. Forms created and supported by the unit include, but are not limited to, the DT4000 Crash Report, the Uniform Traffic Citation, the Natural Resources Citation, the Non-Traffic Citation, the Warning Form and the Driver Condition Report. Beyond form development, unit members support a hosted TraCS environment for over 100 outside agencies. Agency support is accomplished through phone, email, and remote support tools for TraCS user agencies across Wisconsin. This unit also hosts an annual Statewide TraCS Users Conference training event for over 550 agencies that use TraCS.​
