MOTOR CARRIER ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM

(TRUCK LAW)​

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide the law enforcement officer an A-to-Z format in dealing with Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) during traffic stops. This course is designed primarily to train officers in skills necessary to recognize size/weight violations and the enforcement of Chapters 347 and 348. Officers will be provided concentrated instruction in motor carriers laws and their enforcement; specifically, Chapters 194, 341, 343 (CDL), 346 (CMV OWI), 347 and 348.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify traffic law violations that pertain specifically to commercial motor vehicles.
  • Identify what vehicles are subject to IFTA and IRP and requirements for credentials.
  • Identify Commercial Driver's License classes, endorsements and restrictions.
  • Identify different types of operation- private or for-hire.
  • Identify equipment violations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to determine a vehicle's axle groups and overweight violation.
  • Identify requirements for oversize/overweight permits and the credential requirements.
  • ​​Identify legal size, weight and load requirements

PREREQUISITES:

Student must be an LESB certified law Enforcement officer and an interest in CMV enforcement.


ITEMS TO BRING: 

  • Laptop, laptop charger, notebook, writing utensil, calculator.
  • ​Business casual attire is acceptable for all days except for Thursday.
  • WSP personnel should wear BDU's on Thursday.
  • County/Municipal officers should wear something they may be comfortable with getting dirty as we will be utilizing the inspection bays at the Sparta SWEF.
